About Katrina
Katrina is a dedicated piano teacher, composer, accompanist, and harpist who finds joy in blending these musical roles. Based in Cairns, Australia, she offers both online and in-person lessons from her welcoming studio. Her teaching approach is mindful, nurturing, and deeply informed by the impact of music on childhood development.
Katrina’s love of music began early, leading her to study at the University of Newcastle (Australia), where she earned a Bachelor of Music (Honours) and a PhD in Composition. During this time, she honed her teaching skills through hands-on experience and collaboration with other educators. Her commitment to young learners deepened when she achieved her Kindermusik certification, running successful early childhood music classes and building a well-respected music studio in her community.
Katrina’s journey didn’t stop there. Recognizing the importance of continuous growth, she formalized her skills with a Diploma in Piano Performance and now stays connected to the student experience by taking harp lessons herself. This keeps her teaching approach fresh, relevant, and empathetic. In addition to teaching, Katrina is a skilled rehearsal pianist and accompanist for students and choirs, enriching her musical experience and inspiring those she teaches. She also composes whenever possible.
In 2022, Katrina relocated to the tropics of Far North Queensland, seamlessly continuing her online teaching while quickly establishing a new in-person studio. She welcomes students of all ages and abilities, helping them explore a variety of musical styles and goals. Whether preparing for exams or progressing without that pressure, Katrina encourages her students to delve into improvisation, composition, lead sheet playing, and to develop a solid foundation in music reading, theory, and history. With Katrina, students don’t just learn music — they are given the space to explore, create, and thrive.
